     Writing about teen drivers reminded me of the very first night our youngest son, Chad, drove our car.  It was in the fall and he wanted to go to a high school basketball game at Hoover in Des Moines.  We had an almost new 85 Chevy Celebrity that I used in the business.

     Before he left I sat down with him to go over the "ground rules."  "Don't speed, don't have the car overflowing with kids, don't show off, don't have the radio blaring and, most of all, be home by 10:30pm." 

     He left, we prayed!  At about 10:30pm, my first cousin's husband called me.  He said "you don't have a brown Chevy Celebrity do you, Lew?"  I said that I had just purchased it.  Why?  He said, "well, I don't know if I should tell you or not but. . ."  I knew something bad was coming next!  I told him I wanted to know why he was asking and he said that my car, with Chad at the wheel, had passed him (and many others besides) driving too fast for traffic conditions, zig zagging in and out of traffic with all the windows down and many kids yellow out the same -- with the radio blaring!  EVERYTHING I had told Chad not to do, he had done.  And, it was now 10:45pm, not 10:30pm as I had told him he should be home.

     I hung up the phone and the back door opened and in came Chad.  Not suspecting a thing!

     I said "Chad, you're late!  And the way you were driving tonight, you should have been home early!!!  Of course, Chad was speechless.  That's when I decided to buy larger, safer cars! 

     Make sure your Iowa auto insurance policy has high limits if you have a teen driver and I would be so bold to suggest you also have an Umbrella policy on top of it.  One accident could ruin you financially for life.
