  For anyone living with the fear that he or she will outlive his or her money, an income annuity might have a great deal of appeal.  This type of annuity requires that investors pay a lump sum to a life insurance company in return for monthly checks that will keep coming for the rest of the investor's life.  Even if the amount of money he/she invested has been received back in monthly payments!!  The amount that the investor will receive is based largely on his or her age and the current interest rates. 

  In the past an investor had to give up control of his/her money for this kind of a deal.  He or she would give up access to the funds in return for receiving a higher level of sustainable income than other investments earning the same return.  Now, with the newer hybrid Indexed annuities you retain control also.  And the income you are promised may go up as the index goes up each year.  The index used most often is the S&P 500 index.  But, the income you are guaranteed will never go down when the S&P 500, for example here, goes down!  And, if the investor should die, his or her beneficiary would receive the balance where before it was retained by the insurance company.
