An attractive nuisance is not your spouse!! It’s a much greater hazard!!!
What do a backyard swimming pool, a sauna, and a dirt pile have in common? Not much unless you recognize them all as accidents waiting to happen. Then they all qualify as “attractive nuisances.” (If you don’t think a mound of dirt is attractive, you’ve been an adult too long!)
The adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” seems to have been written with attractive nuisances in mind.
Here are some ways to practice loss prevention so you don’t have to file a claim under your Iowa Homeowners policy:
Install a fence with a high latch around pools. Apartment complexes and motels do this – and the reasons are just as obvious for homeowners. Little children won’t be able to get in unattended, and liability will be decreased.
Don’t install a diving board or slide. Most insurance companies will cancel coverage if you add one of these to your backyard pool.
Keep pool water clean and turn on the underwater floodlights at twilight so the bottom is visible.
Install the temperature control and timer with automatic cutoff outside the sauna, as a safeguard for anyone who falls asleep inside.
Make Jacuzzi and hot tub areas off limits to glass of any kind.
Remove the dirt pile. The kids will find a safer place to play, and you can plant a garden in its place.
Your homeowners insurance policy offers liability coverage in the even a visitor is injured on your property and decides to sue you but you can help limit those opportunities.
If you install a pool or Jacuzzi, consider upgrading your liability protection. A million dollar umbrella only runs about $200 a year. That could be the best money you’ve ever spent.
